My IWDK Recommendations from AU

Lone Koefoed spends most of her daytime pondering how we might be better at understanding the way that computers, technology, and digitalisation affects everything we do.

As a university researcher and educator in the cross-over of digital technologies, arts, and design, Lone is especially interested in ways that our current (or dominating) perception on the role of digital technology can be challenged. This can for instance be done through doing provocative or speculative digital design (a class Lone often teaches), or through understanding how artistic practices are useful also to developers that are not artists.

At IWDK, Lone will be keeping an eye out for these three events in particular.

Event #1


This event is organised by my own people! PhD students and master students from Digital Design and Information Studies at Aarhus University are staging an exhibition of prototypes and provocations that they are doing themselves this semester. Under the headline "post-factual design 2027" they've created objects through which we can discuss how digitalisation and digital technologies affect our lives. The purpose is to use the framing of 2027 as a mirror to interpret 2017 more than it is an attempt at predicting 2027.

Event #2

The Official Opening of IWDK

The official opening is interesting for several reasons, one of them is Ida Tin of the company Clue. Clue is a highly successful menstruation tracking app, Tin is Danish and female, and these three things combined makes it a must for me. There is too little feminist technology research and development in the world and it shows. So I'm going to find out if Clue is an example of the oppposite.

Event #3


It is terribly important that we figure out a way to increase the diversity in the digital development world. One such way is to keep trying getting more girls and women moved from being users of technology to also being developers of it. It's not good when white, 25-45 year old white males are doing the most of that development work because even if they are different individuals, obviously, they share large parts of their foundation for being in the world. So I'm going to repeat to everyone I know, that they need to get rid of gender stereotypes and one way of doing that is by engaging in the work. One such example is this event.
